DI wins the Parsee Club Invitation

By Aamir Khan

Post flag hoisting ceremony at the DI, most members present there as well as the sporting enthusiasts made their way to the Calcutta Parsee Club (CPC) to participate as well as cheer the team taking part in the mini-sports tournament organized by the CPC.

The tournament comprised three sporting events; Pool, Table Tennis and 5-a-side Football Match. Other than DI and the CPC, the other participants were St. Xavier's College and the CCFC. DI had its regulars out to prove their dominance in all the mentioned events.

The never say die spirit of the DI participants finally bore fruit as we emerged as the overall champions of the tournament. All thanks to the accuracy of the pool players, the skill of the footballers and the agile table tennis players.

We topped it off with the most delicious lunch organized by the hosts. Thank you, Parsees.

Football, the repeat order

by Rukhshi Elias

27th July 2008 – encore of the original five-a-side football tournament for all at the DI.

The whistle blows and we see 10 members on the field (actually it was the badminton court). Five-a-side footballers of all ages (and sizes-xs,s,m,l,xl and xxl also) took positions. Wile the two teams struggle to get charge of the ball just like politicians and the chair, there is a flurry behind me. Other team members are changing T-shirts and hunting down absconding participants (look in the bar, yaar, where else?).

The first two teams come off field and you can witness a lot of complaints punctuated by loud pants and collapsing and sweating (bad referee! cheating! not fair!). This sequence repeats itself till the end of the day. In between we saw some great footwork and shooting and defence by Arijit, Zafar, Naseem Ali, Neil, Steve, Wehzan, Altamush, Lorenzo (the xs size), Shahid, Sameer, Vineet, Bappa, Rhea and others. Special mention must be made of participants who were extra energetic and enthusiastic although they were a little on the other side of age and weight (sorry, no names!). Most disappointing was the number of spectators. We need to tempt more ladies to come and join me in cheering. I could have walked away with a prize for being the only lady spectator like Rhea got for being the only girl player!

Good effort by our brat pack - Kyle, Joshua, Haaris, Adnan, Lorenzo, Zaid, Nikhil, Mubashar and all the others whose names I might have missed.

It was encouraging to see our Jr Vice President, Syed Hannan Ali, on the football field and off the tennis court! We missed our President's presence and his expert commentary!

Congratulations to organisers-you did good! Looking forward to many more such events.

Intra-club 5-a-side Football Tournament

June 15 saw rain and that saw the enthusiastic footballers abandon the slush and transfer indoors for a high-energy 5-a-side tournament. The sign-ups saw 56 players aged 7 to 55 placed in eight teams. There were 7 players in each team comprising 3 "kids" and 4 seniors. Kick off was at 3 p.m. (Sports items begin on time at the DI).

Hats off to Rhea Rao, the only girl to brave the tournament and to the gang of little kids – Lorenzo, Darren, Joshua, Haaris and Adnan – all 8 years or below.

The excitement continued till around 8.15 p.m. when the finals ended with Christopher's team losing out to Arijit's team through a Golden Goal. Thanks, Steven, for your undying energy in organizing sports in the club.

The next Intra Club Football will be on July 27 and the list of sign ups is already getting rather long.

DI versus CC&FC

July 5th our team played a full-scale soccer match against the CC&FC on their grounds. After a great match, well fought, the hosts beat us by a solitary goal. Well played, guys.

Annual Aquatics Results

by Rukhshi Elias

Thanks team DI, once more, for all the excitement!

It was an afternoon full surprises, with all the dark horses (or were they dolphins?) displaying their true colours. New faces, broken records and of course screaming parents and our commentator with his unrelenting comments!

Good show Gurankit, Pankaj, Muskan, Afzal, Siddharth, Guranjan, Nikhil, Natasha, Rohit, Tanvi, Zaid, Haaris, Adnan and all the other participants. Kudos to all the winners and cheers to all the participants. Giving away most sporting swimmer awards was a very encouraging gesture.

Most encouraging was the announcement of a proffessional training programme... hope we see results soon. Could we check our records to see if Haaris has created a record as the youngest winner of the junior diving championship at the age of 8 years?

Hats off once more to the team behind the success of Annual Aquatics 2008 at D.I. -- Derek, Steve, Puneet, Bappa, Talu, Ashu, Biswajit and the others!!
